MUSIC OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
An almost enclosed intercontinental sea, the Mediterranean includes countries in Southern Europe such as Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Malta; countries in North Africa such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, as well as countries in the Near East such as Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine.
Music is an essential part of life in the cultures around the Mediterranean, reflecting their cultural richness and the diversity of their traditions.
The arrival of the Arabs on the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century brought with it a rich musical heritage that has greatly influenced Mediterranean music. The fusion of Arabic music and traditional Spanish music gave rise to a unique form of musical expression known as Andalusian music, which remains an integral part of the region’s musical heritage.
