Regarding
The former Church of Sainte Marie in the old town, which had already been partially destroyed during the war of 1642 between France and Spain, was completely razed to the ground in 1672 on Vauban’s orders to make way for the castle’s glacis.
It was not until 1684 that the new church was built. The external gallery was added in 1725. Despite its austere exterior, the church boasts exceptional interior richness and architecture, in particular the high altarpiece by the Catalan artist Joseph Sunyer, carved from wood and covered in gold leaf. The stones of the bell tower mark the stages of its construction.
