Saint-Jean-le-Vieux is the town's original church.
On 16 May 1025, Gaufred II, Count of Roussillon, and Béranger, Bishop of Elne, celebrated the consecration of the new church dedicated to Saint-Jean-Baptiste.
In 1102, Gislabert II instituted canonical life in the church and in 1116, Arnau-Gaufred had a hospital for the poor (Saint-Jean) built to the west of the church wall.
In the first half of the 13th century, the building underwent extensive renovation: the beautiful portal carved with a majestic Christ dates from this period.
The church cannot be visited. You can admire the portal from the forecourt adjacent to the cathedral.
