The village of Ria is notable for having produced a family that became the lineage of the ancient Counts of Barcelona and Kings of Aragon. This house provided kings to Castile, Navarre, Sicily, and the island of Majorca, sovereigns to Provence and part of Languedoc, and queens to France, Castile, Portugal, and the Kingdom of Naples…” (Abbé Delaporte – History of Roussillon, 1790). From the Latin Lucus, meaning “Sacred Wood,” the first mention of the hamlet of Llugols appears in 977. It seems to have been deserted by its original population in the 17th century due to the plague.
