With *Empire*, the La Zampa dance company has created a choreographic epic in which movement becomes a means of exploring power dynamics, domination and transformation. On a stage set comprising twenty-five tatami mats of shifting shapes, six dancers and the musician Marc Sens explore a physical language drawing on judo and English country dancing. Falls, loss of balance, moments of suspension and bursts of energy come together to form a dance in which fragility becomes a creative force. Carried by looped guitar tracks and a vibrant visual world, the piece unfolds a shifting landscape—at once intimate and political—where bodies invent new ways to resist, to connect and to reinvent the world.
