Regarding

Perched above the town, this Fort dominates the town and was built by Vauban circa 1680 and reinforced by Napoleon III between 1850 and 1856. Visit: the rampart walk, counterscarp gallery, Chapel, bastions, bread oven, prison, the Fort’s museum that is connected to Villefranche-de-Conflent’s medieval city by a staircase that has 799 steps.
It can be accessed on foot via an archaeological trail (20 min walk).
There is a walkway for the most courageous or by 4 x 4.
The Fort Liberia also houses an exhibition by the Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
