Château d'En Bardou
66200 ELNE
FranceRegarding
Purchased in 2005 by the town, the Mothers of Elne enables us today not only to see and understand the history of the place, but also the struggle of a woman, Elisabeth Eidenbenz, a member of the Swiss organisation “Secours Suisse” for children. Between 1939 and 1944 during one of the most tragic and shameful periods of European history, she was the soul and mainstay of this oasis of life and hope. Thanks to her, 597 children were born here to mothers fleeing the concentration camps; a thousand women and as many children sought refuge here, where they found peace, comfort and respect, where previously they had lived through tragedy and horror. This is the story that is told here; more than ever it is a 'guardian' for memories and life.
