MEMORIAL DU CAMP DE RIVESALTES

Built amongst the ruins of the barracks, which bear witness to the fate of more than 60,000 people, the Rivesaltes Camp Memorial is an extraordinary contemporary building, designed by the architect Rudy Ricciotti.
Spanning over 1,000 m², it tells the story of the Rivesaltes camp, which, from 1941 onwards, interned Spanish Republicans, foreign Jews and Travellers, before becoming, from 1945 to 1947, a detention centre for Axis prisoners of war and, from 1962 onwards, a transit camp for the Harkis and their families.
The Memorial also serves as a key reference point for the history of forced population displacements during the 20th century and examines the displacement of exiles today. A programme of academic and cultural events (temporary exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, etc.) is offered throughout the year.
