Until the early 1960s, Escaro was one of the main centres for iron ore mining in the Canigó massif. Today, a museum retraces its history. With its unique collection of tools and everyday objects, it offers a fascinating insight into the hard work of the Conflent miners. It's a fascinating, moving and thoroughly informative experience!
The visit can be combined with a walk around the remains of the old Escaro concessions (bookings required for groups of 10 or more). This is a 3? hour walk along the paths once used by the miners. You'll discover the scars left in the landscape by the fluorite quarry, see rails coming out of nowhere, and walk along inclined planes with abandoned wagons.
