Built from 1925 to 1932, by a Catalan architect Léon Baille, it is now an official historical monument, because it was one of the first reinforced concrete buildings.
Cerbère was, in these old days, an affluent town, thanks to the very lucrative business generated by the railway. That opportunity gave the town some grand houses. The train was the only way to cross the border until the international road opened in 1928.
The Belvedere was a fully equiped hotel, with bar, entertainment and shows, casino, movie theatre, and the first garage on entering France.
Architecturally speaking , the building is original. Situated between the railways and the road, it has a spectacular outside spiral staircase. The general feeling of the building is the last period "" Art Nouveau "" with the organic shapes, like the palm tree pillar.
