LA TOUR DEL FAR

The Tour Del Far, this sentinel of the Salanque, is part of a vast network of signal towers set up by the Catalan kings of Majorca at the end of the 13th century. Like Madeloc and Massane, perched on the heights of the Albères, its role was to warn the Roussillon plain of any invasion. When an army was in sight, the lookouts assigned to the Far tower warned the Salanquais population of the danger by lighting large fires.
During the day, clouds of smoke could even indicate the approximate number of soldiers approaching. Each cloud corresponded to around five hundred men.
In the Middle Ages, towers with a similar role were spread throughout the Pyrénées-Orientales.
