Regarding
In the centre of the Place Royale stands the 33-metre-high Obelisk, built at the request of Marshal De Mailly to glorify King Louis XVI. Made of pink marble from Villefranche de Conflent and white marble from Estagel by the architect of the Enlightenment, Charles de Wailly, it is adorned with 4 bronze bas-reliefs representing an independent America, a raised navy, the abolition of servitude in France and freedom of trade. In the four corners of the grille, four allegorical trophies evoke the continents known at the time: Asia, Africa, Europe and America.
The building has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1920.
