Paracolls is one of the oldest fortresses in the Conflent (its name is mentioned in 948), built, as its name suggests, to defend a mountain pass (in this case, more of a narrow gorge). It was part of a network of signal towers that extended up to Mosset and beyond, towards the Jau Pass.
